About
Hello,
Welcome to the Transgender Mental Health Blog. I hope this will be a forum to discuss all things related to mental health, psychotherapy and support for transgendered, transsexual, gender queer and gender variant individuals and their friends and family.
(Note that the blog is not focusing on other issues related to transgenderism, such as medical breakthroughs, transgender rights, etiology and political issues, other than when they are touched on in their relationship to mental health. There are other excellent venues for that on and offline.)
I’m Ami B. Kaplan, LCSW. I’m a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst in New York City (and on Skype) and have worked with Transgendered and Transsexual individuals for many years. I’m a long time member and committee member of WPATH. I’m interested in a discussion of what works and what doesn’t work in helping individuals achieve the highest level of comfort with their past and current lives, with transitioning and with dealing with the problems of growing up with some form of gender variance.
Please contact me if you are interested in having a 90 minute PowerPoint presentation for your organization on Transgender Issues 101. This covers terminology, etiology, prevalence, cultural and emotional issues, transition and how to be an ally.
